School Sports Physicals FAQs

What is a sports physical?

A sports physical, also known as a comprehensive initial pre-participation physical examination (CIPPE), is an essential step to ensure that children are safe and prepared to engage in sports activities. It involves a comprehensive evaluation to identify any conditions that might pose a risk during sports or other physical activities.

Does my child need a sports physical?

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. (PIAA) requires every student who wants to participate in an interscholastic sport to undergo a sports physical before the start of the season. These exams have to be performed by an “Authorized Medical Examiner,” which includes primary care physicians like Dr. Harry Myers and Dr. Dina Myers.

When should I schedule my child's sports physical?

According to the PIAA requirements, sports physicals cannot be authorized before May 30. In other words, it's best to schedule your child's sports physical after May 30th, but before the start of the season. We typically recommend scheduling six to eight weeks before the season begins, as this allows enough time to address any potential health concerns or follow-up appointments if needed.

It is always best to check with your local school district or community athletic association for their guidelines.

Regardless of when it's done, the exam is effective until the following May 31st.

Why do I need to schedule a sports physical for my child every year?

A yearly sports physical is essential in ensuring your child is healthy and ready to play. Children's bodies are constantly growing and changing, so it's important to monitor their health and identify any potential issues as they arise. Additionally, sports physicals give doctors a chance to assess any previous injuries and determine if it's safe for your child to continue playing their desired sport.
